Precipitation Scaling with Temperature in the Northeast US: Variations by Weather Regime, Season, and Precipitation Intensity

نویسندگان

چکیده

We present a novel hierarchical Bayesian quantile regression model to estimate how precipitation scales with temperature depending on season, weather regime (WR; i.e., large-scale patterns of atmospheric circulation), and percentile. The approach develops regional scaling estimates by partially pooling data across sites, accounting for uncertainty stemming from variable record lengths. Results using long-term records daily hourly both dry-bulb dew point the Northeast US suggest that rates vary 0% 8% per °C. Scaling rate variability is driven most season percentile precipitation, only modest variations WRs. Daily are highest in winter summer, while at percentiles greatest summer. Lower more extreme quantiles handful storms occurring cooler temperatures but strong vertical uplift heavy precipitation.

Variations of Twentieth-Century Temperature and Precipitation Extreme Indicators in the Northeast United States

An examination of five temperature and five precipitation extreme indicators reveals an increase in both temperature and precipitation extremes over the 1926–2000 period in the northeast United States, with most of this increase occurring over the past four decades. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of winter frost days (FD) and warm nights (TN90) and also winter consecutive dry days...

Are variations in PMSE intensity affected by energetic particle precipitation?

The correlation between variations in Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE) and variations in energetic particle precipitation is examined. PMSE were observed by the Esrange VHF MST Radar (ESRAD) at 6753 N, 2106 E. The 30 MHz riometer in Abisko (6824 N, 1854 E) registered radio wave absorption caused by ionization changes in response to energetic particle precipitation. The relationship between...

Weather regime dependence of extreme value statistics for summer temperature and precipitation

Extreme Value Theory (EVT) is a useful tool to describe the statistical properties of extreme events. Its underlying assumptions include some form of temporal stationarity in the data. Previous studies have been able to treat long-term trends in datasets, to obtain the time dependence of EVT parameters in a parametric form. Since there is also a dependence of surface temperature and precipitati...

Trends in Canadian Precipitation Intensity

Past research has unveiled important variations in total precipitation, often related to large-scale shifts in atmospheric circulation, and consistent with projected responses to enhanced greenhouse warming. More recently, however, it has been realized that important and influential changes in the variability of daily precipitation events have also occurred in the past, often unrelated to chang...

INTERANNUAL VARIATIONS OF TROPICAL PRECIPITATION PATTERNS by

Seasonal and annual precipitation anomalies, normalized with respect to the standard deviations are computed for stations between 30*S and 30N. It is established that the annual anomalies are normally distributed. Spatially averaged anomalies are computed for various regions and their representativeness confirmed. Correlations between the annual average normalized anomalies of the various regio...
